AOUDAD

hunt overview

You will arrive the day before the hunt begins. Typically, we head to the range as soon as you arrive to check you and your rifle to make sure everything is squared away for the hunt.

Free range aoudad in West Texas is possibly the most challenging and most rewarding hunting experience available to sportsmen in the Lone Star State. Native to the rugged mountains and extreme climate of North Africa, these incredible animals thrive in the similar environs found in far West Texas.

Be physically prepared for this hunt. Your hunt will involve lots of glassing and moving to locate the animals. Once we spot a ram we want to go after, we will discuss a stalk plan. Expect long steep approaches in very uneven terrain and potentially high temperatures. You will be carrying all the water you need for the day in your pack. Be prepared to shoot at ranges up to 500 yards. If you would like precision rifle training, we can help with that.

Rifle and Ammo

You need a rifle that fits you well and is capable of making accurate shots out to 500 yards. For aoudad we strongly recommend a lightweight rifle that you can comfortably carry in steep terrain over long distances. Weight is less critical when hunting pronghorn but we still recommend a lighter rifle as we do cover a lot of country on antelope hunts.

We recommend an optic with at least 12 power top end magnification and target turrets or BDC.

· Aoudad we recommend 6.5 PRC or larger.

· Pronghorn 6mm/243 or larger.

Comfort/ Camp Items

- Linens and pillows are provided

- Camp has a fully stocked kitchen

- Towel

- Toiletries

- Camp shoes or sneakers

- Power pack and charging cables for phone

First Line Gear

- Good boots with plenty of support. Terrain will be rocky/ loose, does not need

insulation or even gore tex.

- Good socks. I recommend a good wool sock such as Darn Tough

- Good base layers (this is the key to moisture and temp management). A thin wool

or a synthetic blend is recommended.

- Insulation layers. Waffle tops and thin fleece go in this category

- A breathable working layer, top and bottom. This is your outer garment. The

newer 4 way stretch pants work well, along with the uninsulated shell type

materials.

- A warmer loft type jacket. This is for static hunting and during the UTV rides.

- Good head gear. I like a thin beanie or sun boonie hat for movement combined

with a thin Buff neck gaiter when I stop moving. Sun will be intense as there is

very little shade.

- Headlamp

- Carry 10-15 rounds on you.

- Gloves, thinner working set

- Compass/ GPS

Second Line Gear

- Range Finder

- Small binos to scan during movement

- Phone app/ Kestrel/ Data cards for shot solutions

- Gear carrying system: belt pouches or back pack

- Rifle and magazines

- Bipod

- Suppressor and paperwork

- Knife or Havalon blade

- Spotting optics/ tripod (optional)

Third Line Gear

- Back pack

- Trekking poles

- Water bottles or bladder

- Extra batteries

- Flashlight

- Shooting support bag. I clip my mini fortune cookie to the outside of

my pack with two carabiners. It does not swing/ sway around and I can

shoot off of the pack with it secured in a pinch.

-  Any meds you need

-  Any booze you prefer

-  Hunting license/ tags

Misc

-  Small piece of ground pad to sit on while glassing
